Clives Fruit Farm - A Pioneer of Pick Your Own! The Pick Your Own season starts in June with Strawberries. The main varieties grown are Elsanta, followed by the later Symphony and Florence - all with a unique flavour. Raspberries start towards the end of the strawberry crop in late June and our main variety is Glen Ample because of its delicious large fruit and spineless canes. The raspberries are followed by our relatively new venture which is Cherries. By planting seven different varieties of which the most common is Stella – we aim to extend the cherry season as long as possible. Pick Your Own Plums start mid-July. The season starts with the deliciously sweet Opals followed by Victorias, Herons, Swan, Jubilee and ends with Marjorie Seedling.
The optimum picking dates for storage for Cox, Bramley & Gala is approximately the second week in September. This is when most of our fruit is carefully picked and put into cold storage to supply the shop through the winter. We start picking the Pears mid-August with William closely followed by Conference, Comice, Concorde and Glou Morceau. “By heck, there’s nothing like picking it yourself!” “I never knew apples grew on trees!” For some people it is a trip down memory lane or for
others it is a first experience to collect their own
Eggs. A must for every visitor to the
farm is to taste a truly fresh free-range egg. |
